If you're hosting a party this weekend, you should consider building some cornhole boards. It's a great casual 2v2 game that can be played with a drink in hand! Now what's better than that?
Instead of wasting over $200 on a pre-made set, spend a fraction of that building a higher quality set yourself. Timothy Dahl of Charles and Hudson does a great job explaining how to build boards from scratch. You'll need to make two in order to play. Here's the instructional article:
Dont forget: You'll still need to buy 8 corn bags in order to play (two different color sets of 4). To view a full breakdown of the rules, the picture below links to the ACA's rules page. It's a lot of reading for a simple game.. below I have broken down the basics of gameplay.
The Basics
- From board-end to board-end, measure 27 feet and line them up straight.
- Opposing players stand in adjacent Pitcher's box when throwing the bags. Don't step over the foot line (the inner edge of the board). Penalty for crossing the line is up to the house. We usually do re-dos.
- The first team to reach or exceed 21 points wins. Cancellation scoring is used (at most, only one team can earn points per inning)
- 3 points earned for a cornhole (in the hole), and 1 point for on the board.
- Corn bags must not touch the ground before or after pitching (on the fly only). Any touched / touching bags must be removed before continuing play.
- The team that scored previously pitches first.
- Players alternate pitching until each player has pitched all four bags.
- 7-0 is a skunk. Personally, we play 11-0 because 7-0 runs happen quite often.
- In the event of a tie at the end of an inning, the team that caused the tie goes first next inning.
If you still need to find bags, I'd Recommend these from Amazon. If you want to be completely DIY and make your own bags, check out this extremely helpful two-part article.
That's it! Now go get those boards built in time for your 4th party this weekend!
