How to Refinish a Bathtub
Instead of spending a lot of money on a new tub, clean your existing one. With a little bit of elbow grease, it will look like brand new.
Prepare the Tub
Remove any anti-slip strips with a cleaner and degreaser. Wash the tub with an abrasive cleaner and scrub the tub with some Lime-A-Way.
Sand the Tub
Sand the tub with 400-600 grit (wet) sandpaper. This will remove any grime from the cleaning products, as well as give good adhesion for coating.
Apply the Paint
Mix epoxy and paint it on with a brush and roller. Some tips when painting on epoxy:
- Brush in one direction
- Brush on a couple smooth, thin coats
- Feather the edges to avoid hard lines
- Apply the second coat an hour after the first
Caulk the Corners
Caulk all around the tub, where the tub meets the floor and walls to ensure a waterproof tub
