How to: Faux Stone Halloween Columns

October 4, 2013
halloween0.jpg

Halloween is coming! It is time to start making all your home décor, and today we'll start with columns. Get working this weekend!

Halloween Column Materials:

  • Monster mud
  • Acrylic paints
  • 2 Styrofoam tortilla containers
  • toothpicks
  • 2 pool noodles
  • sonotube concrete foam
  • Gorilla glue
  • Gloves, sponge, paintbrush, cheesecloth, latex gloves

Form the Top and Base of the Column

The column is a cardboard sonotube. The top is a tortilla container with the handles cut off.

Place the column on top of the sonotube and attach with gorilla glue. Slit one side of the pool noodle open and slide it onto the bottom of the sonotube, and adhere with gorilla glue.

Attach Toothpicks

Place the sonotube with attached pool noodle onto a square Styrofoam base. Center the tube and trace its position with a sharpie. Insert toothpicks a half-inch inside the marker line, then cover them with gorilla glue and slide the pool noodle onto them, then let dry.

Apply Monster Mud

Cover the column with 1/4-inch of Monster Mud. Leave overlapping streaks for texture. Cover the base cap with enough to conceal the imprinted design and let dry.

Apply Gray Base Coat

Apply a coat of gray over the entire piece. You won't need a base coat if you used the Monster Mud. Apply random shades over the column for a more natural feel.

Create Faux Marble Effect

Use a sponge or cheesecloth to dab two colors over the surface. Some of the base should still be showing.

Use a paintbrush with a smaller tip to drag the colors in random diagonals, going top-down.

For more detail, use a brush to add watered-down brown drips and let them run down the sides. You can also add fake moss, and put a carved pumpkin head on the top.
