Design Styles Basics

January 6, 2014

New at interior design? Here's a short guide describing characteristics of some popular styles.

Traditional

designstyles0.jpg

Taken from the roots of 18th-century English, 19th-century neoclassical, french country and British colonial. Color palette includes mid-tones with muted fabrics, simple florals, solids, strips or plaids.

Contemporary

Incorporates clean, sleek lines marked by solid colors. Colors consist of muted neutrals with usually bold colors in furniture and accessories. Also includes lots of glass and/or mirror use.

Modern

Polished surfaces, strong geometric shapes & asymmetry. The color palette is neutral. The appearance is very open, and very neat. It is the opposite of traditional.

Rustic

Unrefined natural elements that give a cozy effect. Colors and decorations based around wood, stone, and metal.

Eclectic

By definition, something eclectic is composed of elements drawn from various sources, so it is a mix of styles. Usually takes the best from different styles and mixes them in a way that is visually pleasing.

Mediterranean

A color palette that is similar to the sea, in addition to terra cotta, yellow and lavender. Short furniture with ornate legs. Hardware is heavy and usually burnished. Textured fabrics and walls.

Shabby Chic

Cottage inspired; weathered white-painted furniture, painted motifs, floral prints in muted colors, white slipcover sofas, and vintage accessories.
